With a twinkle in his eyes and the aura of a successor, Segun Agbaje has always known he was destined for greatness.
Born to Chief Julius Kosebinu Agbaje, a popular banker who was Chairman of GTBank for many years, J. K. Olusegun Agbaje must have had an interest in banking from an early age having gotten early classes in banking from his father.
Currently the Managing Director/CEO of Guaranty Trust Bank, with over 20 years of investment and international banking experience, he can be called Nigeria’s very own banking icon.
Earning a Degree
Clearly seeing a bright future ahead of him, the 51-year-old who looks 35 attended St. Gregory College, then moved on to the Harvard Business School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (1986) and a Masters in Business Administration (1988) from the University of San Francisco, USA.
Climbing Up The Corporate Ladder
Prior to joining GTBank, he worked with Ernst & Young, San Francisco, USA as a staff auditor from 1988 to 1990. He subsequently joined Guaranty Trust Bank as a pioneer staff in 1991 and worked in almost all groups in the bank. As deputy managing director, he was directly responsible for the Institutional Banking Division which comprises Energy, Telecommunications, Treasury, and Corporate Finance Groups.
Mr. Agbaje rose through the ranks to become an Executive Director in January 2000. He was later appointed Deputy Managing Director in 2002, a position which he held until April 2011 when he was appointed Acting Managing Director when the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tayo Aderinoku, went on medical leave. On June 22, 2011, he was made the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer succeeding Mr. Aderinoku after his death.
The brilliant banker serves on the boards of GTBank in Ghana, Gambia, and the United Kingdom. He is also a Director on MasterCard Advisory Board Middle East and Africa.
His Family And Politics
With a father that had a interest in politics, Segun Agbaje is said to have always always been a strong financial pillar of his elder brother, Jimi Agbaje, PDP Lagos State gubernatorial candidate’s political ambition.
In 2012 and 2013, he received the African Banker of the Year Award from the African Banker and Euromoney respectively. He recently won the Africa’s Banker of the Year during the 2015 World Finance Awards.
Under his leadership, Guaranty Trust Bank plc has also received numerous national and international accolades and commendations which include the 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 Best Bank in Nigeria Awards from Euromoney, the 2013 Best Bank in Africa Awards from the African Banker Magazine and the 2011 Best Bank in Nigeria Award from London-based EMEA Finance magazine. EMEA also rated GTBank as Africa’s ‘Most Innovative Bank’ 2013 while Segun Agbaje was recognised as the 2013 pan-Africa CEO of the Year.
Segun Agbaje has a son with his beautiful wife, Derin Olakunrin.
