Chika Madubuko is the Nigerian lady who started Greymate Care to help ease the stress of combining work and taking care of a vulnerable family member.
Greymate Care is an online platform that connects the elderly, weak, disabled and convalescent to a caregiver right in the comfort of their homes. The company provides professional assistants to offer 24/7 companionship and assistance where it is required; they provide services that cut across daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, incontinence care, washing, meal preparation, overseeing home deliveries, running light errands, and conversation.
Chika graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a master’s degree in Biotechnology. She has worked in the logistics, agricultural and the pharmaceutical sectors before settling down to start Greymate Care in October, 2016 – she got certified at Welwyn Garden, Hertfordshire to become a caregiver. Her starting capital was contributed by her family and friends and it took her 7 months to turn a profit.
For Chika, improving lives and creating jobs have always been the goal and Greymate care is helping her achieve that. She hopes to gain 30,000 service users by 2018, and raise enough funds to expand to other African countries like Kenya and Ghana.
According to Chika, the company was conceived from personal experience:
“Greymate Care was created so Nigerians never have to experience the same hassle we did when my granny became bedridden due to diabetes. We were all busy and couldn’t provide her with the care she deserved. Hiring a caregiver for her was so complicated.
Sometimes miles were traveled in futility to interview one caregiver, and we often ended up with a poorly trained caregiver. Not to forget the security issues that had to do with having a total stranger in the home. I asked around and discovered it was not peculiar to our family. The busy professionals complained too.
Our caregivers are background checked thus taking the stress of care off busy professionals. The icing on the cake is that you can get even a doctor or a nurse from the platform.”
